Pixel 9 Pro Fold One Year Later: How Google Closed the Gap with Samsung

    By Alin1 day ago
Pixel 9 Pro Fold one year later: How Google caught up to Samsung in just two generations

Foldable phones have evolved from experimental devices into serious productivity tools—and few rivalries have shaped that progress more than Google vs Samsung. One year after the arrival of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, it’s clear that Google has dramatically narrowed the gap with the Galaxy Z Fold lineup. In just two generations, Google moved from “promising newcomer” to “legitimate competitor”—and today, choosing between the two is more about preference than compromise.

A Quick Recap: Two Generations of Rapid Progress

Google’s first-gen foldable introduced a wider cover screen and excellent Pixel photography, but also carried early-generation drawbacks: visible crease, thicker chassis, and unrefined large-screen software.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold delivered the refinement the platform needed:

    • Slimmer build and sturdier hinge

    • Better inner display experience

    • Major Android foldable-mode improvements

    • Maturing AI integration through Gemini

The result: near-parity with Samsung in build quality and a clear advantage in native Android software features.

Design and Durability: No Longer “First-Gen”

    Hinge and Crease
Google strengthened the hinge mechanism and improved overall material fit and finish. The crease is still there (as with all current foldables), but far less distracting in regular use.

    Displays and Ergonomics
The cover screen maintains a natural phone-like aspect ratio, while the inner display now feels optimized for multitasking and reading, with high brightness, accurate colors, and smooth refresh rates that match Samsung’s flagship panels.

Software Advantage: Android, the Way Google Intended

    Multitasking & App Continuity
The biggest leap isn’t hardware—it’s software:

    • Persistent taskbar and split-screen app pairs

    • Smooth drag-and-drop between windows

    • Improved continuity when switching from cover to inner screen

    • More large-screen-optimized apps (not stretched phone apps)

Samsung pioneered many of these ideas, but Google’s deep integration with the OS takes it further.

    AI: Gemini vs Galaxy AI
Google’s Gemini features are deeply embedded:

    • On-device summaries

    • Contextual actions using whatever’s on screen

    • Smart photo and editing tools

Samsung’s Galaxy AI still shines for translation and S Pen workflows, but Google’s on-device AI feels more fluid in a foldable productivity environment.

Cameras: Foldable Photography, Finally Done Right

Google brought its full computational photography backlog to the 9 Pro Fold. Photo quality is on par with slab-style Pixels, with excellent HDR, natural skin tones and powerful low-light performance.
Video quality and stabilization are also markedly improved versus the first-generation Fold.

Performance and Battery: Real-World vs Benchmarks

Samsung’s Snapdragon chips still win synthetic benchmarks. But in normal use—split-screen tasks, AI features, photography—the Tensor-powered Pixel 9 Pro Fold feels fast and responsive, while emphasizing machine-learning efficiency.

Battery life is solid for a foldable and gets through a full day of mixed use. Charging remains competitive, though not industry-leading.

Ecosystem and Updates: Google Catches Up

Google now matches Samsung’s long software support window, offering years of OS upgrades and security patches.
Cross-device features (Quick Share, clipboard sync, watch/bud integration) make the Fold a natural choice if you already own Pixel devices.

Pixel vs Galaxy: Where Each Still Leads

Category Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold Samsung Galaxy Z Fold
Large-screen Android experience ✅ Stronger (native integration) ➖
    Cameras ✅ Stronger (computational) ➖
    On-device AI ✅ Gemini integration ➖
Raw performance / gaming ➖ ✅ Faster Snapdragon
Stylus and accessory ecosystem ➖ ✅ S Pen support
Accessory / case availability ➖ ✅ Wider ecosystem

Price and Value One Year Later

One year after launch, carrier deals and trade-ins make the Pixel 9 Pro Fold significantly more affordable. Combined with long-term update support, its total cost of ownership is now much more attractive than at launch.

Who Should Buy the Pixel 9 Pro Fold (Today)?

✅ You prioritize cameras, AI tools, and pure Android multitasking
✅ You already own Pixel Buds / Pixel Watch
✅ You want a foldable that feels refined—not experimental

    Who Should Choose Samsung?

✅ Maximum raw performance (gaming, heavy multitasking)
    ✅ Stylus workflows and S Pen-centric productivity
✅ Existing investment in Samsung’s accessory and ecosystem products
